How many deaths in Jersey have been recorded as suicide in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017 so far?

B

How many of the people whose death was recorded as suicide had been receiving help or treatment for mental health issues?

C

How many of the people whose death was recorded as suicide had received in the past help or treatment for mental health issues?

D

Please break down these answers into age, gender and Year.

Response

The figures in response 'A' below are Public Health statistics using Office of National Statistics (ONS) definitions and coding.

A

Deaths in Jersey recorded as suicide:

  • 2012:  12
  • 2013:    9
  • 2014:    8
  • 2015:  10
  • 2016 and 2017: currently unavailable as these have not yet been coded.

B

10 of the individuals above had open episodes with mental health services when they died.

In addition to the 10 people identified above, a further 13 individuals had received support from mental health services at some point in the past 10 years.

D

Due to the small numbers involved, it is not possible to provide a further breakdown; to do so would risk unfairly disclosing personal data of identifiable living individuals and is therefore exempt under Article 25 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011.

Article 25 - Personal information

(1) Information is absolutely exempt information if it constitutes personal data of which the applicant is the data subject as defined in the Data Protection (Jersey) Law 2005.

(2) Information is absolutely exempt information if –

(a) it constitutes personal data of which the applicant is not the data subject as defined in the Data Protection (Jersey) Law 2005; and

(b) its supply to a member of the public would contravene any of the data protection principles, as defined in that Law.
