Request

Can you provide me the following recorded data:

From April 2015 to March 2018

A

Patients with hypertension (high blood pressure)

B

Patients who are recorded with a BMI (body mass index) of 30 and above

C

Patients with any recorded incidence of diabetes (any type)

D

Patients who have recorded to them a history of CVA / stroke or pulmonary embolism (PE) or deep venous thrombosis (DVT) requiring long term anticoagulant therapy but excluding aspirin therapy

Response

A

From April 2015 to March 2018 there were 7,580 patients who had an inpatient episode where hypertension was coded as a diagnosis.

Please note these diagnoses are not necessarily the cause of the inpatient admission. Any inpatient with hypertension would be coded regardless of whether the diagnosis was a contributing factor to admission.

B

BMI is not coded and therefore the information is not held.

C

From April 2015 to March 2018 there were 2,238 patients who had an inpatient episode where any type of diabetes was coded as a diagnosis.

Please note these diagnoses are not necessarily the cause of the inpatient admission. Any inpatient with diabetes would be coded regardless of whether the diagnosis was a contributing factor to admission.

D

The Health and Social Services Department code long term anticoagulation therapy, but would only code this on admissions to hospital subsequent to the therapy commencing. This would not identify which patients had a history of the above conditions, which were on anticoagulation for other diseases or those who are on it prophylactically for other risk factors. Therefore the information is not held.
