Request
Has the States of Jersey settled the official ownership of the Jersey Celtic Coin Hoard discovered in Jersey in 2012? What payment has been made to the British Crown (if they are decided to own the coins)?
Response
With the absence of any Jersey statute law on treasure, the find was treated as Treasure Trove and the Hoard was claimed by the British Crown through customary law. The Government of Jersey acknowledge this.
The Government paid the Crown £487,808 following an initial valuation of the Hoard. A further £250,000 was paid as an anticipated expense for cleaning and conservation, thus a total of £737,808.
