Response
The States of Jersey police do not hold details of vehicle speeds for Road Traffic Collisions (RTC’s) reported to the police. In serious incidents where a fatality or life changing injury is caused, a specialist unit of accident investigators (AI) is deployed. Part of their role is to determine the speed of the vehicle(s) at the time of the incident. This is achieved by using any available evidence including, marks left on the road at the scene, CCTV from buildings or vehicles and witness evidence amongst other sources. Police do not hold the information for the speed of all RTC’s as requested above and therefore cannot give a percentage of accidents at various speeds.
The below table details those RTC’s where excessive speed was recorded as a contributing factor in the collision although this may be as a result of witness evidence and not corroborated. This is not a full list of incidents as not all RTC’s are witnessed.
Type of vehicle Year / Injury | 2018Fatal | 2018Serious | 2018Slight | 2019Serious | 2019Slight | 2020Serious | 2020Slight |
