Request

Over the last three school years at Haute Vallee secondary school;

A.

How many external and internal suspensions have been implemented including the reasons and durations for these suspensions?

B.

How many 'exit' room admissions have there been including reasons for exiting pupils and the lessons the pupils were exited from?

C.

How many external suspension requests from the head teacher to the education minister have been declined?

Response

A:

External suspensions

A student is not permitted to attend school and must work from home under the supervision of parents. The majority of suspensions range from one to five days.

External suspensions, and the reasons for them, are outlined in the Excel spreadsheet below.

Internal suspension

A student may be removed from several lessons to work in the exit room, for up to five lessons in one day.

Internal suspensions, and the reasons for them, are outlined in the Excel spreadsheet below.

Data has been provided for the academic years: 2012 to 2013, 2013 to 2014 and 2014 to 2015.

B.

Exit rooms
Students can be sent to the exit room during a lesson after three exit warnings for any behaviour which disrupts learning.

Forward exit
A student can be on a planned removal from a lesson in advance, perhaps to allow time for restorative meetings to be arranged and strategies put in place.

Exit room admissions are outlined in the Excel spreadsheet below.

Data has been provided for the academic years: 2012 to 2013, 2013 to 2014 and 2014 to 2015.

C.

The ‘Guidance on Improving Behaviour and Reducing Exclusion’ policy states: “Where a Head Teacher wishes to suspend a pupil for more than a five day period in any term, or for a total of more than 15 days in a term, the advance authorisation of the Director of the DfESC or his nominee should be sought”

There have been no denials to requests for external suspensions.
