Request

A

How many male calves (dairy herd) were slaughtered in 2022?

B

How many pregnant cows (dairy herd) were slaughtered in 2022?

Response

A

The Government of Jersey did not process any male calves through the abattoir in 2022.

However, it should be noted that 1,490 calves were euthanised, within days of birth, in 2022.

The Government of Jersey does not record the sex of the calf when they are euthanised.

The following definitions were used in relation to the information provided.

  • a bovine calf as an animal under six months in accordance with the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority)
  • the definition of slaughter is an animal killed for food and as such taken through our abattoir process.

B

There were 16 pregnant dairy herd cows processed through the abattoir in 2022.
