Request

Please advise what percentage of the Covid19 cases admitted to the Jersey General Hospital were smokers.

Response

Cases meeting the criteria for inclusion have been identified by the diagnosis codes assigned to the episode of care in the Electronic Patient Record. This includes all cases of laboratory-confirmed Covid, and cases documented as Covid or suspected Covid (treated as Covid) coded as such, irrespective of the reason for attendance at hospital or main condition treated.

Data is derived from reporting by discharge date. Patients admitted prior to 1st January 2020 but discharged after this date will be included. As Clinical Coding of a patient’s admission is carried out after discharge from hospital, data related to ongoing inpatient activity is not captured.

Data is incomplete for the full time period in question, and consequently, figures may be subject to change as Clinical Coding of admissions continues and completion levels increase.

The attached table shows the percentage of admissions with Covid (as above) where the patient has been documented and coded as a smoker, by year of discharge. Individuals may have been admitted on multiple occasions and all instances of admitted patient care, including day admissions, have been reported.
