Request
Please provide, from 1990 to date, the number of tonsillectomy operations performed annually for the local population of Jersey.
Response
Table 1 details the number of public tonsillectomy procedures completed at Jersey General Hospital per year, from 2000 to 2010 (inclusive). Cases meeting the criteria for inclusion have been identified by the procedure codes assigned to the episode of care. As it is not possible to differentiate between admission types in the archived legacy system from which these data are extracted, annual figures include all elective and emergency admissions with tonsillectomy procedures recorded.
Table 1 - Tonsillectomy procedures (2000 to 2010).pdf
There was a system changeover in 2011. Table 2 details the number of public tonsillectomy procedures completed at Jersey General Hospital from January 2011 to June 2011, and separately, from July 2011 to December 2011. Figures for this year are derived from both the archived legacy system and the Electronic Patient Record which replaced this. Cases meeting the criteria for inclusion have been identified by the procedure codes assigned to the episode of care, as per the system in use for the respective timeframe. Data for this year are considered less robust than other years due to the system changeover.

Table 3 details the number of elective public tonsillectomy procedures completed at Jersey General Hospital per year, from 2012 to 2023 (inclusive). Cases meeting the criteria for inclusion have been identified by the procedure codes assigned to the episode of care in the Electronic Patient Record.
