Vehicle imports to Jersey (FOI)

When a vehicle is imported from the UK or any other country, is it checked to see if it has been crash damaged before it is registered in Jersey? In other words, can a previously crashed and then repaired car be brought to Jersey and registered as a never damaged, clean logbook car?

When an application to register a foreign registered (imported) vehicle in Jersey, the vehicle will undergo a vehicle integrity check where the vehicle’s identity is checked against the documentation presented.  

​Part of that check is a basic mechanical check to ensure the vehicle is roadworthy. 

If a vehicle has been previously recorded as an insurance write off, then the applicant is required to provide full details of the insurance category write off and nature of the damage involved. 

Category A and B insurance write offs are required to be scrapped as part of the insurance write off process and so should not be presented for registration. 

Category S (previously C) insurance write offs are classed as repairable (beyond economical repair) and as such can be re-registered. 

Category N (previously D) insurance write offs are ‘not recorded’ and as such can be re-registered. 

Where insurance write off details have been provided (for Category S or C only) then comments will be added to the Vehicle Registration Document.​
