The Government of Jersey holds its financial reserves across a pool of funds, the largest being the Strategic Reserve and the Consolidated Fund, with the monetary value held in various forms such as bonds, cash, shares and national Treasury bills - popularly described as "paper money".
A number of major global entities are increasingly concerned over the intrinsic value of paper money, which are basically IOUs, and are insisting on fiscal settlements being made in "physical gold".
How much "physical gold" by weight in coins or ingots, is held across the Government of Jersey reserve funds on behalf of the public of the Island?
Response
The investment strategy of each of the States Funds is outlined in the investment strategy document, presented to the States and published online. Please see link the below:
States Investment Strategies R.168-2023 (statesassembly.gov.je)
Portfolios are invested through the Common Investment Fund which includes an appropriately diversified range of assets.
Included in the asset allocations is the Hedge Fund Pool, mandates of the vehicles within this Pool allow them to allocate to gold, however the portfolio includes no specific allocation to physical gold, and none is directly held by the Government of Jersey.
