Ectopic pregnancies data (FOI)

The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust has launched a Think Ectopic campaign which aims to reduce harm to women experiencing ectopic pregnancy by improving clinician awareness of symptoms and prompt referral for diagnosis.  For the period of 1 January 2023 to 1 January 2024 please confirm the following:

What was the annual number of patients seen in the hospital with an early pregnancy complication?

How many patients were diagnosed as an ectopic pregnancy?

C

How many patients were treated as a pregnancy of unknown location (PUL)?

D

Of the PUL group, how many patients went on to be confirmed as an ectopic pregnancy?

Number of reported patient safety incidents related to ectopic pregnancy?

For each incident, please specify degree of harm:

For each moderate or severe incident, please specify details (for example late diagnosis, haemorrhage and so forth).

The information requested is not held in a central record to report. Therefore, Article 3 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 applies.

Fewer than five safety incidents related to ectopic pregnancy or pregnancy of unknown location have been recorded in the incident reporting system for 2023. As numbers are small, disclosure control has been applied to protect the privacy of individuals, and it is not possible to specify detail of the incident or the degree of harm, nor detail of learning which could lead to the identification of individuals and breach the confidentiality of their personal information. Therefore, Article 25 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 has been applied to protect the privacy of individuals.

Article 3 - Meaning of “information held by a public authority”

For the purposes of this Law, information is held by a public authority if –

(a)     it is held by the authority, otherwise than on behalf of another person; or

(b)     it is held by another person on behalf of the authority.

Article 25 - Personal information

(1) Information is absolutely exempt information if it constitutes personal data of which the applicant is the data subject as defined in the Data Protection (Jersey) Law 2018.

(2) Information is absolutely exempt information if –

(a) it constitutes personal data of which the applicant is not the data subject as defined in the Data Protection (Jersey) Law 2018; and

(b) its supply to a member of the public would contravene any of the data protection principles, as defined in that Law.​
