Please confirm the number of strokes in 2023 to include TIA separately if possible. by month, age, gender and tType of stroke as well haemorrhagic or Ischemic patients sent off island for surgery or treatment.

Figures for admissions with a primary diagnosis of stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA) recorded in people discharged from hospital in 2023, broken down by diagnosis, age group and gender of the person affected are detailed in the tables below. 

Owing to small numbers, it is not possible to provide monthly breakdowns as individuals may be identifiable. Article 25 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 has been applied to protect the privacy of individuals. Quarterly figures have been provided where possible. 

Cases meeting the criteria for inclusion have been identified by the diagnosis codes assigned to the episode of care in the Electronic Patient Record, where either stroke or TIA has been recorded as the primary diagnosis. Primary diagnosis coding indicates the main condition treated or investigated throughout the episode of care.

Clinical Coding of a patient’s admission is carried out after discharge from hospital and figures are derived from reporting by discharge date. As such, patients who were admitted prior to 1 January 2023 but discharged after this date will be included. For the same reason, patients admitted prior to 31 December 2023 but discharged after this date will not be included in the numbers. Data is not yet complete for 2023, and consequently, figures may be subject to change as Clinical Coding of cases continues and completion levels increase.

Health and Community Services’ records do not capture strokes or TIAs that did not result in admission, such as where a patient has been transferred directly from the Emergency Department to a U.K. hospital for treatment, or those who passed away without admission.
