Following previous concerns raised, what changes and improvements have been made since June 2024 where it was announced in the media that the hospital were reviewing current guidelines and practices surrounding ectopic pregnancies?
Response
Since June 2024:
- Obstetrics and Gynaecology Consultant appointed as lead for the Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit (EPAU)
- Improvements to collaborative working between the Emergency Department (ED) and EPAU, to ensure women are seen at the correct time and in the correct place
- Pathway for ectopic pregnancy reviewed and updated to ensure that women are cared for in the most appropriate place if admission is required
- A refined approach in involving the Gynaecologist in managing early pregnancy patients in ED
- Introduction of EPAU leaflets for ED
- Fast approach to treatment should be undertaken
- Training needs for EPAU doctors identified and met
- Multi-Disciplinary Team training planned within the EPAU with the Consultant lead and nursing colleagues.
