1

In each year from 2017, can I have a yearly breakdown of the number of calves and cows slaughtered by the knacker's service.

2

If the data is held, how many of said calves/cows were Jersey cows?

3

Why are calves killed at a higher proportion than other animals?

4

And finally, do you have a breakdown of the reasons: i.e. What proportion of slaughters in each year were for disease, and what proportion in each year were killed because they were male calves, etc.?

Response

1 and 2

The Government of Jersey does not record the number of cows and cattle euthanised by the knackers yard service or which breed they are, therefore, Article 10 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) law applies

3

The Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 gives a right to request information that is held in recorded form, unless exempt.

This part of the request poses a question rather than seeking information held in a recorded form.

This information is not held, therefore, Article 10 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 applies.

4

The Government of Jersey does not record the reason for slaughter, unless it is a notifiable disease, therefore, the requested breakdown is not held and Article 10 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 applies.

Article applied

Article 10 - Obligation of scheduled public authority to confirm or deny holding Information

(1) Subject to paragraph (2), if –

(a) a person makes a request for information to a scheduled public authority; and

(b) the authority does not hold the information, it must inform the applicant accordingly.
