COMMUNITY SAFETY FUND – AWARD OF GRANT
Purpose of the Report
To consider a recent application for a grant from the Community Safety Fund to a maximum of £10,000 per project.
Background
In June and December 2007, interim arrangements for considering applications for and awarding grants from the Community Safety Fund, for small but important initiatives, were approved by the Minister (MD-T-2007-0058 and 0112). Six grants were awarded.
The criteria approved by the Minister for considering applications and awarding grants in the interim are:-
· The proposal should be beneficial to the community at large;
· For one off items of expenditure directly related to community safety;
· Island based;
· For proposals that would significantly enhance or raise awareness on community safety and for which there is no or insufficient public funding;
· A maximum interim award of £10,000 per project.
Discussion
A further application has been received for a grant from the Community Safety Fund, as outlined below.
Organisation | Amount Requested | Purpose |
Child Accident Prevention | £2,000 | Purchase of safety equipment (stair gates, fire guards, etc) |
The home safety equipment that would be purchased by Child Accident Prevention Jersey (CAP) would be provided, at a reduced cost, to families on low income with children under five years old. Around 630 children under five were injured at home and attended Accident and Emergency in 2007. It is expected that providing this safety equipment at a reduced cost will lead to fewer accidents to those under five. Further details of the proposal are outlined in the letter from CAP, dated 11th February 2008 (attached).
The application meets the criteria.
Recommendation
The Minister is recommended to award a grant of £2,000 to Child Accident Prevention Jersey to purchase safety equipment.
Reason(s) for Decision
To allow a small but important community safety initiative to proceed.
Action Required
Subject to the Minister approving the grant, the sum to be disbursed to the relevant organisation.
