Hillside Cottage, Le Vier Mont, Grouville.
This report has been prepared by Jersey Heritage as part of its responsibility under a Service Level Agreement to provide reports and recommendations to the Minister for Planning and Environment on the architectural, historical, archaeological and other significance of buildings and places.
The assessment undertaken and the recommendation given in relation to the above building and place is made under the auspices of Article 51 of the Planning and Building (Jersey) Law, 2002; and the criteria for the listing and grading of heritage assets adopted and published by the Minister for Planning and Environment.
The report also includes the views and advice offered by the Listing Advisory Group in relation to the assessment of this building and place.

Special interests of the site
Historic interest
Buillt circa 1840, although with some interior fittings of earlier pattern. Land Registry traces history of site to purchase of plot of land by Elie Marie in January 1839. Shown on 1849 Godfray Map. Called Providence Villa in 1884 contract, and Hill View in 1946 contract. Rear outshot of later C19 date.
Architectural interest
Cottage - 5 bay, single storey with attic; single storey outshot to rear. Front (south) elevation: C20 concrete pantile roof with 2 small dormers with 6 pane (3/3) sash windows. Rendered brick chimney to each gable. Walls rubble granite, rendered, with scored ashlar effect and vermiculated keystones. Windows are original 12 pane (6/6) timber sashes. Replacement front door. Small front garden with granite steps down to street level, rubble granite boundary wall with brick gate piers. Rendered gables with 4 pane sash to ground floor and double casement to attic on west elevation. Rear (north) elevation: central catslide dormer, with single storey service range outshot - brick with concrete pantile roof.
Interior of main cottage retains original circa 1840 plan and some early C19 joinery features. Single pile. Central stair hall with exposed ceiling joists, original staircase with plain stick balusters; C18 pattern H-L hinges to understair cupboard. Early C19 pattern 6-panel doors to ground floor rooms. RH ground floor room with original timber fire surround and flanking integral cupboards. Exposed ceiling beam to both rooms. Both attic rooms have original planked doors with C18 pattern H-L hinges. Rear outshot has no internal interest.

A circa 1840 single storey cottage, which retains its historic character in proportions and detailing with some original features surviving throughout.
Advice offered by MLAG (and others if stated)
At their meeting on 10/06/2013 MLAG agreed with the Jersey Heritage recommendation that the building be Listed as grade 3.
