REPORT TO THE HOUSING MINISTER
Policy HD51 – Forces Policy for Affordable Housing
Background
The existing criteria for housing through the Affordable Housing Gateway does not currently offer any dispensation for Service personnel returning to the Island, such applicants can only be assisted if they meet the criteria set out below:-
1. People with medical, physical or mental disabilities, who need special types of housing, but who cannot afford such accommodation in the private sector.
2. Families with young children, on relatively low incomes. (We consider situations involving separation or divorce on a case-by-case basis, but we cannot provide children with more than one home.)
3. People aged 50 or over, on relatively low incomes.
However, the Housing Minister recognizes the significant sacrifice given by local residents who join the Armed Services and have had to move abroad to carry out their duties. Permanent members of the Armed Services are provided with accommodation for the duration of their service and that accommodation is not normally available once military service has come to an end.
Having full regard for how Service personnel are catered for in the UK it is deemed appropriate and justifiable that priority is awarded differently to the Ministers standard eligibility criteria for affordable housing.
Recommendations
That the Minister,
1. Approve the adoption of Policy HD52 – Forces Policy for Affordable Housing
