Author of report: Roger Hills BA(Hons) MA DipBldgCons (RICS) IHBC Head of Historic Buildings
Date of report: 17 February 2009
File ref: TR0047
Current status
The building sits within the AS relating to Les Catieaux earthworks site – it is otherwise unregistered.
Relevant interests of the site (see assessment form)
Historic interest
The building, which is in a dilapidated condition, dates to the 18th century and would appear to relate to the farmstead of Les Catieaux on the opposite side of the road. The structure sits within field 920 and was clearly designed to function with that field with all openings facing south and east. The owner is unsure of the building’s history but as the Richmond map shows the building within an orchard, it would seem possible that it was used as a shelter for pigs / storage.
Architectural interest
The building is single-storey, constructed of rubble granite with sizeable granite quoins and stone dressings. There is no roof. There is a large doorway on the east gable and 2 short door openings on the south elevation (the small scale indicating use by animals). The interior is overgrown but there is an internal wall separating the east door cell from the cells facing the field.
Scenic interest / group value
The outbuilding has group value with the nearby farmstead and is of scenic value.
Advice offered by MRLAG (and others if stated)
MRLAG discussed the building at its meeting on 9 February 2009. Members were unanimous that it should be registered as a BLI.
Jersey Heritage recommendation
Register as BLI.
Justification relating to criteria
The registration of the farm outbuilding opposite Les Catieaux as a BLI is in accordance with the existing criteria for assessment and designation of historic buildings:
the outbuilding substantially retains its historic form and detail, with missing elements readily recovered from surviving evidence, and so make a significant and positive contribution to the architectural and historical character and appearance of Jersey;
the outbuilding is of interest for its architectural design and use of materials in the vernacular traditions;
the outbuilding is of historic interest as it is illustrative of 18th century / early 19th century farming practices and more widely of Jersey’s social, economic and cultural history;
the outbuilding is of group and scenic value.
