On Wednesday 29th of August almost 100 Jersey undergraduates will gather at The Bar Café to celebrate the end of a very successful 2007 Jersey Undergraduate Internship scheme.
In its second year, the initiative has involved 94 students across 65 local companies and 15 States of Jersey departments. During their summer vacation undergraduates have been working within island businesses ranging across fields as diverse as architecture, engineering, finance, construction, dental care, jewellery production, graphic design, website development and even the organisation of the Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon.
Senator Philip Ozouf, Economic Development Minister said: “I am delighted that the 2007 graduate internship scheme has built upon the success of the 2006 project. The initiative fosters long term relationships between the undergraduates and local employers which is totally in line with our aims to work closely with local businesses and develop an effective environment for nurturing a skilled workforce locally. The scheme benefits both the employer and the employee - the undergraduate profits from a worthwhile and challenging placement which develops work experience skills and the business benefits from the skills and expertise of an enthusiastic undergraduate.”
Economic Development’s Enterprise and Business Development department established the scheme in 2006. The department initially assists potential interns put together a job specification to facilitate the right placement, going on to help in candidate selection and provide financial support. Employers are subsidised with a contribution to interns’ wages with a payment of £125 a week, for a maximum of 8 weeks.
