Bring it, don’t bin it

06 March 2008

Transport and Technical Services are pleased to announce a number of improvements to the island’s network of recycling bring banks.

The first improvement is that the familiar blue paper bins and red aluminium can bins situated at the bring bank sites are being replaced with large wheeled bins. The new bins can be emptied much more efficiently and the number of bins at each site can be easily altered in line with public demand.

The second change is that each site will include facilities to recycle a wider range of materials. Each site will now offer receptacles for paper, metal food packaging (including aluminium and steel cans), plastic bottles and plastic bags.

The new bins include colourful signs which have been designed in accordance with the national standard developed by WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme). The signs explain what can and can’t be recycled at the bring banks and this is important as even a few incorrect items can contaminate a bank and make the entire contents non-recyclable.

New sites have been created in the St Clement Parish Hall Car Park and in the Goose Green Car Park in St Peter as the network did not previously service these parishes. A third new site has been created in the Grainville School Car Park in St Saviour.

TTS will be following the launch of the new facilities with an awareness raising campaign to help islanders become familiar with the locations of the bring banks and to inform recyclers of the materials that can be recycled at the banks.

Guy de Faye, Minister for Transport and Technical Services said: “ Our programme to increase levels of recycling is on track and the improved facilities will help get us to the 32% target by next year. Convenience is key in encouraging recycling so I am really pleased to be able to offer an improved service..’
