Tenders have been received for the Island's scrap metal recycling management.
In September 2011, Transport and Technical Services (TTS) went out to tender for the management or service-only operation of metals recycling, to follow on from the close of the current contract, which expires on 25 December 2012. The closing date of 7 October 2011 has now been reached; expressions of interest have been received, and these will now be reviewed.
The tendering process explored the market and options for running the service. The disposal of scrap metal has changed over recent years with environmental considerations becoming far more stringent and complex, especially in the manner that metals are received and processed. With the introduction of the Jersey Waste Management (Jersey) Law 2005 it is also the right time to seek ideas for dealing with our Island’s scrap metal, and to develop a new contract with an operator that will provide an efficient and effective service.
The scrap metal market is subject to fluctuating metal prices. It is therefore essential to establish a contract that will take account of this changing income potential, as well as to develop a partnership which benefits both parties.
