States of Jersey goes Eco-Active

04 April 2011

The States of Jersey has committed to reducing its environmental impact through Eco-Active States, a new programme being introduced across the organisation.

All departments will have to change the way they work to achieve a 10% target reduction in energy and water consumption and a 15% reduction on staff travel. The States of Jersey has also committed to introducing and implementing comprehensive guidelines for reducing waste, and recycling and buying sustainable goods and services.

Eco-Active States is a structured environmental action plan based on the Eco-Active Business (EAB) scheme which has more than 90 local companies already signed up.

The Minister for Planning and Environment, Senator Freddie Cohen, said “Eco-Active is now in its fourth year and has delivered an amazing array of initiatives providing information on the environment in our Island. This new initiative will ensure that the States plays its part in ensuring that we minimise our carbon footprint and set an example of public sector environmental sustainability.”

Deputy Chief Executive, John Richardson, explained “Eco-Active States focuses on behaviour change, managing demand on resources and improving purchasing decisions in a 3-pronged approach to achieve significant corporate savings while delivering high quality services to the public. Full support for this initiative is being provided from all departments, the utility companies and our supply-chain.”
