A feasibility study into the building of a new police headquarters on La Route du Fort has found that the open section of Green Street car park can meet the needs of the States of Jersey Police.
The political steering group formed to oversee the delivery of a new police headquarters has met to discuss the findings of the study and has agreed that the project should move forward to the detailed design stage.
There will now be a consultation with those affected by the development before a planning application is submitted.
Assistant Treasury Minister, Deputy Eddie Noel, said “The project team has undertaken a comprehensive piece of work and the feasibility study has confirmed that the site would accommodate police requirements in an up-to-date, fit for purpose, specially designed building.”
Public consultation
There will now be a full public consultation with those likely to be affected by the proposed development. Individual meetings with local neighbours and the wider public will take place before the official planning process.
Deputy Noel added “This site represents a good solution for the States of Jersey Police and we are now aiming to develop a planning application for the scheme, which could be ready by mid-March.
“The project will also provide a valuable stimulus for the construction industry during what continues to be a difficult economic time. With this in mind, the group has instructed the project design team to do all it can to ensure that any construction work can begin as soon as possible.”
Redundant sites used for housing
The new police headquarters will significantly reduce the overall use of space and supports the States’ intention to promote flexible ways of working in buildings which are space efficient and cost effective, freeing up redundant sites for alternative use, such as affordable housing.
Chief Officer, States of Jersey Police, Mike Bowron said “We have worked closely with the project team throughout this process and I am delighted that progress is being made towards providing the service with purpose-built, new headquarters.
“This is a significant step towards providing the first ever purpose-built police headquarters in Jersey, which will provide the kind of working environment that modern policing demands.
“I believe the presence of a new police headquarters will benefit the local area and I will personally commit to meeting with neighbours to explain the plans and discuss any concerns as part of the consultation process.”
Public meeting
A drop-in meeting for members of the public has been scheduled for between 5pm and 8pm on Wednesday 29 February 2012 at the Willows Day Centre.
This meeting will provide an opportunity for local residents to understand the scheme, provide feedback, and meet and ask questions of the key people involved in the project, such as the States of Jersey Police, Ministers, the architectural team and other officers.
Subject to the consultation process, it is anticipated that a formal planning application will be made in mid-March. It is hoped that construction will begin before the end of 2012 and that the project will be completed by early 2015.
