Islanders are being reminded that laws which deliver family friendly rights and protection against sex discrimination come into force on 1 September 2015.
Social Security Minister Deputy Susie Pinel said: “This legal protection applies no matter whether you are in the workplace, at school or in a restaurant or a shop. We all need to be aware of our behaviour and employers need to make sure that their policies comply with the new law.”
From 1 September, people in Jersey will be protected against discrimination, harassment and victimisation on the following grounds:
- sex
- sexual orientation
- gender reassignment
- pregnancy and maternity
In addition, new family friendly rights will give employees the right to:
- paid time off work for antenatal appointments
- maternity leave (up to 18 weeks) with a right to return to work
- parental (paternity) leave
- adoption leave
- request flexible working
The 2,500 Jersey employers who receive contributions schedules by post from the Social Security Department will receive a flyer in September reminding them of the changes.
