The Department of the Environment is inviting Islanders to ‘get eco active’ with a week of environmental events and activities from 5-11 June.
'Get eco active' will showcase how and why people should care about their environment. The varied calendar offers unusual and fun opportunities to join in at work or home. Events range from a tour of the energy from waste plant through to a family forest play pop-in session.
The week kicks off on Sunday 5 June (World Environment Day) with the big poo pick up. This event makes a huge difference to our environment as dog mess causes nitrogen burn which damages rare plants and animals. Volunteers are asked to come down to the upper Mont a la Brune car park between 10 am and noon to help clear dog mess from the sand dunes.
Eco active programme manager Jane Burns said “World Environment Day and World Ocean Day fall in the same week, which inspired us to develop a programme of focused events and activities. The week gives the public a chance to get involved with the environment in ways that they wouldn’t normally.
“We’ve put together a wide range of activities that encompass key eco active topics including energy, water, waste, biodiversity and transport. To date, we have more than 20 organisations registered to take part in the Island-wide beach clean including an impressive 40 families from St Clement School alone."
