A new method of parking payment is being trialled in Green Street multi-storey car park allowing drivers to pay using a phone app.
From 13 September drivers will be able to use PayByPhone, paycards or season tickets.
The system is being tested at Green Street car park with the expectation that it will be rolled to other car parks a few weeks later, if it works well.
The new service will give people an alternative to having to buy paycards in advance. Motorists will be able to use PayByPhone to pay for their parking using a credit or debit card and to top up their parking fee without having to return to their vehicle.
The app is ready for download now at the PayByPhone website so that people who use Green Street car park can register for the system ahead of the trial.
To register you will need to enter your vehicle registration and credit card details. Once registered it is very easy to use the new system by accessing your account and providing the location number found on the signs in the car park.
The existing paycard payment system will remain in operation for those not wanting to use PayByPhone and motorists can purchase seasons tickets as normal.
The Department for Infrastructure are keen to get feedback from parkers so that they can ensure that the system works well for Islanders. Any comments should be emailed to PayByPhone to people can call the PayByPhone 24/7 Support Helpline on 0330 400 7275.
Minister for Infrastructure, Deputy Eddie Noel, said “DfI has listened to public feedback when they have said they wanted an alternative to paycards and this service provides one. It will provide users with the flexibility to top up their parking remotely if they decide they want to stay longer and it can also provide you with a reminder that your paid parking is coming to an end if you take up the notifying option. We hope this trial goes well and we can roll it out to our other car parks in the near future and on street at a later date.”
The Chief Executive of Digital Jersey, Tony Moretta, said “It is no secret that since coming to Jersey I have been a critic of paycards when technology can provide a better alternative. I’m really pleased to see the hard work of the DfI team paying off with the introduction of mobile parking to Jersey, and I’m sure that Jersey motorists will take to it quickly and confidently.”
PayByPhone operate this service all over the world and have entered into an agreement with DfI to provide the phone-based parking payment system.
