The Department of the Environment has released a short film to explain Jersey’s targets and progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Jersey is a signatory, through the UK, to the Kyoto protocol. This means Jersey has committed to the
International Convention on Climate Change and to playing its part in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Jersey has set itself the ambitious target of reducing GHG emissions by 80% by 2050, compared with 1990 levels.
Future Jersey survey results indicated that Island residents want to know more about climate change and what Jersey is doing to tackle the problem.
A short video has been created to explain what the international targets for cutting GHG emissions mean for Jersey, and to provide information on our GHG emissions since 1990. It includes information on our progress towards our emissions target, gives some examples of action taken so far, and ideas on how people can help.
The Minister for the Environment, Deputy Steve Luce said “We hope that this short animation provides an insight into the international agreements to tackle climate change which Jersey has committed to, and what they mean for us.
“We have made progress towards our target. However, this is just the beginning of our journey. We must consider the implications of our behaviour as individuals if we are to play our part in reducing emissions globally.”
Jersey has reduced GHG emissions by over a third compared with levels in 1990, but still has a long way to go. Some of the actions taken to date include:
switching to low-carbon electricity from France planting natural grasslands and hedgerows, now covering a sixth of the Island launching our eco active programme, connecting with businesses and schools to set carbon reduction targets launching the Car2Cycle scheme which subsidised 550 bikes running the Home Energy Scheme for six years, installing energy efficiency measures in more than 1,700 homes The
