The States of Jersey Prison Service (SoJPS) is delighted to announce that it has signed the UK’s Armed Forces Covenant. The Covenant is a promise from the nation that those who serve or have served in the armed forces, and their families, will be treated fairly and not disadvantaged.
At the signing the SoJPS made a pledge to honour the Armed Forces Covenant and support the Armed Forces Community, and to recognise the value that serving personnel,
(both regular and reservists), veterans and military families contribute to the services and the country.
Nick Cameron, Governor and Head of SoJPS commented: “The States of Jersey Prison Service employees 21 veterans and reservists, which accounts for 14% of the workforce. Signing the Covenant will further support them and their families, whilst recognising the valuable skills, leadership qualities, team work, integrity, resilience and skills that they bring to the service. I would like to thank each and every one of them for their service to the country, the prison and the people of Jersey.
Deputy Commander (Reserves) HQ 3 (UK) Division, Brigadier David Harrington said: “This signing is a significant development for the States of Jersey Prison Service, which is a strong advocate for the benefits of employing our talented armed forces personnel. It demonstrations the integration of serving members, reservists and veterans and how we are all part of the same team in protecting our communities.”
Lieutenant-Governor, Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Dalton added: “The Covenant is an important initiative and I hope that it will open the door to new career pathways for veterans and reservists to come back home to Jersey following their service and sacrifice for our country, whilst ensuring that those who have served have the support and required access to service and are not disadvantaged.”
To date, the Covenant has been signed by more than 4,000 organisations including Government departments, businesses and charities, all of which have set out their support for members of the armed forces community who are employed by them or who access
their products and services. By signing, SoJPS has committed to upholding the key principles of the Covenant and to promote that the service is an armed forces friendly organisation.
