Children are being invited to sign up for free to the Summer Reading Challenge 2019. The challenge this year is Space themed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing in 1969 and will begin on Friday 12 July.
To complete the Space Chase challenge, children aged 4-11 need to borrow and read six library books of their choice over the summer months.
Children will receive a collector folder when they register for the challenge, where they can collect special stickers along the reading journey. The mission of Space Chase is to help the Rocket family chase through Space and get back the books which aliens have stolen from the Space Library.
A dedicated website offers help for children to find their next read and includes extra games and competitions to play online. Children can read story and information books, audio books and even ebooks downloaded from the Jersey Library website.
A medal and a certificate will be given to those who complete the challenge by Saturday 7 September. Children can sign up the challenge at the town library, Les Quennevais branch or the Mobile Library. Children need to have their own library membership card.
The Summer Reading Challenge offers children a fun filled summer which has positive outcomes for their reading habits and literacy levels. During 2018, more than 2,200 children took part, and this year is set to be even more popular.
Children’s Librarian, Linne Omissi said: “Children love books and receiving medals and certificates for their reading achievements. We are always excited to hear about the children’s favourite reads and we encourage anyone aged between 4 and 11 to join us in our Space Chase mission this year.”
Members of the public wishing to take part but who are not yet members of the Jersey Library, can register for free membership by visiting the town library.
