Biomedical Science Day 2021

24 June 2021

Today, Jersey's biomedical scientists are celebrated as part of Biomedical Science Day 2021.

In Bacteriology and Virology, each year the team processes:

  • 27,000 urine samples for UTI analysis
  • Over 5,000 samples from the sexual health clinic
  • 15,671 MRSA swabs
  • Over 2,000 blood cultures to identify sepsis

The team have also processed almost 200,000 Covid samples.

The Haematology team provides a 24 hour service that plays a major role in the diagnosis and monitoring of patients with disorders of the blood and bone marrow.

There is also a Clinical Chemistry department where blood and other biological body fluids are analysed to help in the diagnosis of diseases. The Biochemistry laboratory is responsible for performing a range of analytical tests including renal, cardiac, liver, and bone assessment. 2.8 million tests a year are processed in our laboratory here in Jersey.

The Cellular Pathology team receives an average of 13,000 tissue samples each year. This equates to roughly 105,000 separate tissue sections being cut and placed on a slide.

There is only one Blood Transfusion department in Jersey which is unique in having its own donor service on site. The department is able to follow the whole process of collecting, manufacturing, testing and issuing red blood cell donations to patients and is also involved in Jersey's haemophilia service which provides patients with haemophilia with therapeutic products to help with clotting.
