Learning At Home website supports young birders

01 February 2021

The Government’s Learning At Home website has been updated to celebrate the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch, which took place this weekend (29-31 January).

The new bird-themed resources are designed for children in Early Years, Key Stage 1, and Key Stage 2, to help them develop their knowledge and understanding of the natural world.

Children and parents can learn more about the Island’s bird species, make bird feeders, and find out how to draw birds. There are also links to well-known stories for younger children.

The resources have been developed to coincide with the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch, an annual event which invites people across the UK to spend one hour recording the birds they see in their garden, or from their balcony, to understand more about how Britain’s bird populations are changing.

Parents are also encouraged to get outside with their children to see Jersey’s birds in the wild. Visits to beaches, reservoirs, parks and woodlands all provide a learning opportunity.
Acting Minister for Education, Deputy Jeremy Maçon, said: “While children are, once again, in schools, the Learning At Home website provides a wonderful way for parents to support their learning.”

“I’d like to thank all the staff in the Children, Young People, Education and Skills Department, who have worked so hard to continue providing new resources to support children and parents.”

All resources are available online at the Learning At Home website
