Le Geyt flats evacuated following gas leak

15 January 2025

Island Energy and the States of Jersey Fire & Rescue Service were called to a suspected gas leak in the Springfield area at lunchtime today.

This evening, Island Energy engineers continue their investigations to locate the leak in the mains pipework in the road, in the Le Geyt area of St Saviour. Once fixed, the gas levels will be regularly monitored to ensure ongoing safety.

The States of Jersey Fire and Rescue Service remain on scene, as a precaution, and Islanders are advised to continue avoiding the area, where possible.

St Saviour's Rd is still open, but down to one lane. In the meantime, please avoid the area to minimise disruption to your journey.

Andium and Island Energy have confirmed there is no gas supply in the affected building.

The residents of the 21 Andium properties, which were evacuated as a precautionary measure, are being offered hotel accommodation tonight, if they do not have anywhere else to go.

Residents are also able to collect vital belongings from their properties, with the support of firefighters.

We would like to thank those affected for their patience and cooperation.

If you smell gas or suspect a gas escape:

  • call Island Energy immediately on 01534 755555, ideally leave the property to call
  • open doors and windows to ventilate
  • turn off gas appliances and, if possible, switch off the gas supply at the emergency control valve. This should be next to your gas meter or on the gas cylinder
  • extinguish all naked flames and cigarettes
  • do not use any electrical appliances or turn electrical switches on OR off
  • do not use the doorbell
  • do not message Island Energy via their website or e-mail about an emergency. Call immediately on 01534 755555

The next update will be provided tomorrow.
