Why a building or place is listed

Why we list heritage assets

Listing provides legal recognition of a building or place’s significance to Jersey’s heritage. It's intended to make sure that the essential character of the asset is protected through the planning system and to ensure that it can be enjoyed by future generations.

Buildings and places of special interest

Buildings and places are listed in Jersey because they have a special interest that is of public importance. Most of them will be listed because they are of special historical or architectural interest, and others may have archaeological or cultural significance.
Jersey Heritage act as the Government’s principal adviser on the heritage value of buildings and places in the Island. They carry out this work through an agreement with the Department of the Environment.
The Minister for the Environment has set out the criteria that are to be used to decide whether buildings and places are of special heritage interest.
