Coca-Cola Europacific Partners is voluntarily recalling a limited number of its soft drinks due to potentially elevated levels of chlorate. While the risk to food safety is low, individuals with sensitivity to chlorate and mild to moderate iodine deficiency may be more susceptible to adverse effects.
Long-term exposure to chlorate can inhibit iodine absorption, which may lead to health issues such as goitre. A single high intake could temporarily reduce the body's ability to absorb oxygen from the blood and, in severe cases, result in kidney failure.
