Jersey Heat Loss Map
The Department for the Environment commissioned a
heat loss map for Jersey. The map helps people understand how much heat they are losing from their homes.
Understanding the heat loss scale
The 5 different colours on the map represent the different levels of heat loss from buildings in Jersey. The 5 levels have been grouped into the following categories in the table below:
Black
(unoccupied or exceptional) | 0 to 50 | The indication is that this property is exceptionally well insulated with extremely low heat loss or was vacant during the survey with little or no heating |

(low) | 50 to 90 | The indication is that this property is well insulated resulting in minimal heat loss |

Yellow
(moderate) | 90 to 130 | The indication is that this property has limited insulation resulting in moderate levels of heat loss |

Orange
(substantial) | 130 to 180 | The indication is that this property has insufficient insulation resulting in substantial heat loss |
|---|
Red
(high) | 180 to 255 | The indication is that this property has little to no insulation resulting in very high heat loss |

About the heat loss survey
The survey was carried out twice, on the evening of 17 February 2011 and the evening of 3 March 2011. This was to ensure data was collected for the whole Island.
A specially adapted plane flew over Jersey and took aerial images of the whole Island. A thermal infrared camera was used which needed clear, dry weather conditions to produce accurate readings.
This is not live and the map is based on the images captured in 2011. Any changes made to properties since then will not show on the map.
Why we made the heat loss map
Energy efficiency, affordable warmth and the Island's carbon footprint are important. The heat loss map shows individual properties and the level of heat they are losing. Looking at your property on the map will help you understand the amount of heat being lost. All properties are included, whether it is your home, school or place of work. You can then consider what steps can be taken to improve the property's energy efficiency.
The map also provides an insight into the energy loss of the Island as a whole. This has helped us develop the energy efficiency services we offer.
Your privacy and the heat loss map
Thermal imagery does not show actual images so we do not believe that your privacy has been affected.
Properties excluded from the heat loss map
The map only provides a snapshot in time. The underlying Island map was drawn in 2008. If your property was built after this date it will not be on the heat loss map.
Factors that may have affected the heat loss map
- a metal roof can appear on the map to have high heat loss but it could just be that this material is reflecting light
- some swimming pools may also appear to have high heat loss, this may be due to the water reflecting light
- if a property was unheated when the images were taken it may appear to have better efficiency than it really has
