Support for your business in reducing energy
The States Assembly declared a climate emergency and agreed the Carbon Neutral Roadmap in April 2022. It commits Jersey to reach net zero emissions by 2050 with targets of a 68% reduction by 2030 and 78% reduction by 2035.
Every business must play their part.
We can offer support to help your business take control of energy use through eco active. Your business will be able to:
- understand your Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions through Carbon Literacy training
- contribute to the Island's aim to reach net zero by 2050
- reduce costs
- show your environmental commitment
How to reduce your business' energy use
To
reduce your carbon emissions, the first thing to do is understand when, where and how
you use energy. You can then identify priority areas and
consider the options for improving efficiency. Download our eco active business energy monitoring spreadsheet to identify what energy your business uses and by extension the associated carbon emissions.

Energy saving tips for your business
- analyse how energy is being used across your workplace as a whole. Review your bills to understand which fuels you are spending the most on
- apply for funding towards a non-domestic energy audit of the property your business occupies. Upon completion of the audit, you will receive an Energy Performance Certificate with a rating of the property's performance
- apply for the low carbon heating incentive. Up to £5,000 match funding is available towards switching from a fossil fuel powered heating system to a low carbon alternative. Funding for energy efficiency is also available as a secondary measure
- train staff on energy and environmental commitments as part of their induction and sign existing employees up to Carbon Literacy Training through the eco active business network
- choose an environmental champion to lead the team through any changes. Ensure support from senior management is available to them
- consider opening windows and doors as the default cooling measures. Remember to close windows and doors before turning any heating on and avoid heating or cooling unoccupied areas
- make the most of any existing energy saving functions. Timer setting should allow the building to heat up just before employees arrive, not before
- regularly service any equipment to ensure it is running efficiently
- it is far easier and cheaper to improve energy efficiency during a refurbishment or redesign process. Consider this if your office layout is changing
- switch off equipment at the end of the day or install timers to ensure this happens automatically
- virtual meetings and working from home can be used to save on travel emissions
- upgraded taps and shower heads, dual flush toilets and waterless urinals can deliver big savings on water use
- if your business involves regular driving, train drivers to improve fuel efficiency and safety on the roads
- if your business has a fleet of vehicles, consider applying for the electric vehicle purchase incentive and electric vehicle charger incentive
purchase a vehicle telematic. These provide a wealth of data that can be used to optimise your fleet, minimise fuel costs through improving route planning, monitoring driving styles and minimising engine idling

Energy: Monitoring use and staff culture
Before you can set reduction targets you need to understand current energy consumption. The case study also shows how they use their data to influence behaviour change in their staff to bring about reduction.

Energy: LED lighting
Lighting typically accounts for 15% of an office's energy use. The case study on LED lighting shows the energy savings that a local company achieved by installing LED lighting into their office.

Energy: insulation and boilers
A range of refurbishments have been made to a residential care home. These have increased energy efficiency and comfort for the residents. The improvements made would be relevant to many other commercial buildings as well as private homes.
