About the consultation
This consultation sets out the Minister for Planning and Environment’s proposals to introduce planning guidance on the treatment and disposal of domestic sewage from new developments. This guidance will outline:
- the policy context for foul sewage treatment
- the potential risks for the environment, amenity and public health
- the information that is required for relevant planning applications
The draft guidance explains in more detail the Island Plan policy on domestic sewage and outlines the information that will be needed when making planning applications. It aims to make sure that sewage is treated and disposed of in the best way possible and includes details about various options such as:
- connection to the public foul sewer
- package treatment plants
- tight tanks (cesspools)
- improved existing septic tanks and soakaways
The minister would like to hear the views of those interested in and affected by the guidance. The minister also wants views about the long-term direction of the Island’s strategy for the treatment and disposal of foul sewage.
