Produced by the Freedom of Information office
Authored by States of Jersey and published on 16 February 2018.

Request

Please kindly provide the number of recorded instances of superbugs (illnesses resistant to standard antibiotics) in the Jersey General Hospital, Overdale and any other Health institutions over the past five years, broken down by year and type of illness.

Response

There is no standard definition of a superbug.

Below is a summary of the multi-resistant organisms usually surveyed.

Multi-resistant organisms are expressed as bacteraemias per 100,000 bed days for methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), vancomycin resistant enterococcus (VRE), gram negative extended spectrum B- lactamase producers (ESBL), gram negative amp C producers (amp C) and gram negative carbapenemase producers.

They are expressed as annual numbers detected / isolated for C. difficile toxin positive cases, multidrug resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MDRTB) and Candida auris.
