A search for descriptions of ‘Septic’ or ‘Sepsis’ in the ICD-10 code table shows the following associated Level 4 ICD-10 codes:
A40 | A41 | A42 | A02 |
A23 | A32 | A54 | B377 |
I2601 | I76 | G9341 | O03 |
O04 | O07 | O08 | R65 |
Of these codes only two appear as a final classification of death (i.e. have been ultimately attributed as the cause of death) of Jersey residents over the period 2015-2017: A403 (sepsis due to Streptococcus pnueumoniae) and A419 (Sepsis, unspecified organism).
See the table below for a breakdown of the deaths by these codes, rounded to the nearest five. Where numbers are less than five the exact figure is not provided as it is considered this could lead to the identification of individuals.
Total resident deaths | 760 | 830 | 810 |
A403 | <5 | <5 | <5 |
A419 | <5 | 10 | 5 |
B
The guidance and rules for coding sepsis have been updated each year which means data is incomparable between these three years.
The table below shows a count of the number of inpatient episodes coded as sepsis as per each particular year’s coding rules.
| 2015 | 2016 | 2017 |
Total | 343 | 233 | 295 |
Age <16 | 87 | 40 | 6 |
C
None of the deaths attributed to sepsis occurred to a person aged under 16.
