What are the Mortality rates from Stroke in the Island expressed as βMorality rate per 100,000β each year from 1990 to the present day.
Response
The international classification of diseases, version 10 (ICD-10) is used to assign an underlying cause of death from the information provided on death certificates.
Statistics Jersey hold data on underlying cause of death, coded by ICD-10 classification, for all deaths from 2008 to 2017.
The mortality data for 2018 is due to be published within the 2018 Jersey Mortality Statistics report in September 2019.
In the most recently available Jersey Mortality Statistics (2017), deaths due to stroke are included within the broader group of deaths due to circulatory diseases, see:
Jersey Mortality Statistics 2017
Deaths where the underlying cause was the narrower category of βstrokeβ are usually coded to:
I64 - (Stroke, not specified as haemorrhage or infarction)
Also included are the codes for:
I60 - Non-traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage
I61 - Non-traumatic intracerebral hemorrhage
I62 - Other and unspecified non-traumatic intracranial hemorrhage
I63 - Cerebral infarction
I65 - Occlusion and stenosis of precerebral arteries, not resulting in cerebral infarction
I66 - Occlusion and stenosis of cerebral arteries, not resulting in cerebral infarction
I67 - Other cerebrovascular diseases
I68 - Cerebrovascular disorders in diseases classified elsewhere
I69 - Sequelae of cerebrovascular disease
G45.9 - Transient cerebral ischemic attack, unspecified
The tables below provide the number of deaths where the underlying cause was stroke (ICD-10 codes I60-I69 and G45.9). They also give the rate of deaths per 100,000 population, for each single year from 2008 to 2017 and also the three-year averages over the same time period.
Counts have been rounded to the nearest five and suppressed where less than five, to avoid statistical disclosure of individuals.
