Where does all our recycling go to be recycled?

The information you have requested regarding where recyclables are sent is partially exempt under Article 23 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 as the information is already accessible on www.gov.je. However, the information on the website only provides figures up to 2017 and does not include information regarding gas cylinders and inert material, therefore, this information is provided below.

The gas cylinders are exported to a specialist in the UK where the cylinders are safely decommissioned and recycled.

Recyclable inert material is received by our partner, AAL Recycling Ltd, who processes it to create secondary recycled aggregate for use in the local building industry.

Please note that the website information provides a summary of island wide recycling. The data presented is a total of the tonnage of material we receive for recycling as well as the tonnage of material reported to us as being received for recycling by third parties who are not contracted to us. We do not hold the information relating to the onward recycling process for the third parties.

Article 23 Information accessible to applicant by other means

(1) Information is absolutely exempt information if it is reasonably available to the applicant, otherwise than under this Law, whether or not free of charge.

(2) A scheduled public authority that refuses an application for information on this ground must make reasonable efforts to inform the applicant where the applicant may obtain the information.
