Users of mental health services (FOI)

I wonder if you can assist. I read with interest the recent FOI response, below, which confirmed the number of ‘active service users’ of mental services. I wonder if the report broke that information down further as I would be very interested to understand where those figures were taken from and with regard the service users 5-65 and 65+, how many were diagnosed with dementia.

Response

The previous response referenced shows the active caseload (as at 31 December 2018) of Adult and Older Adult Mental Health Services, the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service, Psychology (Step 4) and the Alcohol and Drug Service.

Active caseload is a snapshot in time of the number of service users with an open involvement. Ordinarily, an involvement is opened when a referral is received and closed when the service user has completed treatment or is no longer engaging with the service. The figures in the response do not include patients currently in inpatient mental health units but most service users will remain on a community service caseload whilst receiving inpatient care.

It is not possible at this time to report the number of mental health service users with Dementia. This is captured by Primary Care practitioners but is not routinely recorded in the electronic care record systems used in Secondary Care.
