Request
The taxi rank at the Weighbridge was opened to wheelchair accessible taxi's (WAV’s) with a purple plate.
A
Are purple plate taxis other than WAV taxis allowed to stand and collect on the weighbridge at any time?
B
If a passenger knowingly takes a taxi ride and alights without paying, is this a criminal offence or a civil matter. If criminal, which law applies please?
Response
A
Purple plated Taxi-cabs are allowed to access the Weighbridge and any Rank at any time as they all meet the Accessible Standard. This is irrespective of whether they are Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles or not.
B
If a passenger takes a taxi ride in the knowledge that they have insufficient funds to settle their fare and alight without payment they have committed Credit Fraud, a criminal offence under common law.
However, if a passenger enters the taxi with the intention to pay for their journey but discovers upon reaching their destination that they do not have sufficient funds and fails to make future payment it becomes a civil matter.
