Sand Street Bicycle Parking.
I am astounded and saddened that the new cycle rack that has been installed is one where bikes are parked vertically. This of course is fine for cyclists using mountain bikes or racing bikes, but what about cyclists using electric bikes which are heavier and I for one would not be able to lift it into that rack? I feel it would be far more beneficial for a covered horizontal rack to be provided to encourage commuters specifically using electric bikes.
Therefore, please advise me of the following -
A
How much was the rack and how much did it cost to install?
B
Information into the decision to install a vertical rack and not a horizontal rack.
C
Information into plans for installing covered horizontal racks.
Response
A
The cost of the 20 capacity cycle rack was £2,620 including installation.
B
Our primary focus was to use the space as efficiently and safely as possible to install the maximum number of racks to increase the overall cycle parking provision at Sand Street.
Following consultation with users of cycling facilities at Sand Street, safely concerns were raised about vehicles exiting from the basement, therefore, we decided to install vertical racks against the wall.
Please note that there are 24 covered horizontal racks in the basement for cyclists who prefer or need horizontal racking.
C
As part of the Sustainable Transport Delivery Plan five covered cycle parking racks will be created in St Helier during 2020. The design of the racks will be subject to the constraints of the site.
