Request

I’d like to make an FOI request for the following:
A
How many people have been formally diagnosed with Endometriosis in Jersey.

B
How much money has been distributed by the Social Security department in relation to sick leave from employment for Endometriosis (LTIA benefit).

Response

A
Figures for the number of cases of endometriosis in Jersey are not held.

In order to diagnose endometriosis accurately women are required to have a laparoscopy. However, there are numerous women who probably have endometriosis due to their symptoms who have not had a diagnosis confirmed at laparoscopy. There are also many women who have endometriosis who are managed in primary care who have never been referred to secondary care for management of their symptoms. Further there are also many women who have moved to Jersey who have been diagnosed in other countries, such as the UK or Poland.

In the UK it is estimated that amongst infertile women there is a prevalence rate of up to 50%. Amongst women with pelvic pain the prevalence can be even higher. These figures are likely to be the same in Jersey.

B
The information is not held as the department do not code separately for endometriosis.
