A

15 (numbers rounded to nearest five)

The number of positive influenza cases reported by the Infection Sciences Laboratory between 01 March 2020 and 28th February 2021 have been:

  • 10 lab diagnosed cases of Flu A

  • five lab diagnosed cases of Flu B

This includes all lab confirmed cases in Jersey whatever their source – there were no unidentified influenza cases.

All cases were reported in March 2020 . We have not had any laboratory identified cases since.

GP consultations for influenza like illness are recorded on the GP Clinical system and are monitored weekly by Public Health Intelligence.

(Please note GP data should be interpreted with caution due to changes in advice regarding accessing GP surgeries due to COVID-19)

The weekly monitoring reports are made available to the Scientific and Technical Advisory Cell (STAC) and recorded in the meeting minutes at the following link:

About the Scientific and Technical Advisory Cell (STAC) and meeting minutes

Cause of death data comes from the information collected at death registration. All of the conditions mentioned on the Medical death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10).

From all of these causes an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules. The underlying cause of death is defined by World Health Organisation (WHO) as:

a) the disease or injury that initiated the train of events directly leading to death, or

b) the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the fatal injury

In the ICD-10 revision, Influenza is coded J09-J11.

The annual mortality report for 2020 is scheduled to be completed and published by Public Health Intelligence in the summer of this year.

B

Between March 2020 and February 2021, one death was registered with Influenza recorded as a cause of death on the death registration.
