Under the Health Insurance Law, a medical benefit is payable from the Health Insurance Fund to a patient in respect of the cost of a consultation with an approved GP. This benefit is assigned to the GP through a patient signature. The current rate of medical benefit is £20.28. This is established in the Health Insurance (Medical Benefit) (Jersey) Regulations 2005 and this rate was set on 27 June 2012. The law does not include any requirement to review for inflation updates.
As well as medical benefit, the Health Insurance Fund supports a wide range of activities which offer medical services to islanders either free of charge or with a significant subsidy. Services which involve direct payments to general practice include influenza vaccinations, cervical screening, telephone consultations and the Health Access Scheme for people with a low income.
