Request
Please supply me with the following information:
How many people died in Jersey General Hospital from COVID-19 alone? As in they were admitted to hospital and died only due to Covid-19. I can see figures you published but they are deaths within 28 days of a positive Covid-19 test so they could have died from other causes.
I would like to know the exact figure from the 8 June 2021 until the 19 July 2021 of people who died of COVID-19 alone and not anything else, please?
Response
Between 8 June 2021 and 19 July 2021 one Covid-19 related death occurred in Jersey General Hospital. The cause of death registered was:
1a. Covid-19 Infection
1b. ---
1c. ---
2. ---
For further information on the cause of death categories (1a, 1b, 1c and 2) please see FOI response published at the following link:
Deaths with the only cause recorded as Covid-19 (FOI)
Although the GPs / Doctors have different ways of writing COVID-19 on the death certificates, the coding will all lead to the same ICD-10 codes used to code the underlying cause of death. The Office for National Statistics are used to code the Jersey deaths data (to ensure we have robust comparable data) and so they will follow international guidelines.
WHO Medical certification, ICD mortality coding, and reporting mortality associated with COVID-19
This link provides some helpful examples of death certification and what it means.
The data provided to the applicant indicates the person died of Covid-19 and nothing else.
