A

Adults awaiting Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) triage assessment are currently seen within three months.

There are currently 60 adults awaiting diagnostic assessment who have been waiting a maximum of two years and two months. An initiative to bring in additional capacity to clear the backlog will start at the end of November 2021.

In the first quarter of 2020, children waited an average of three and a half months from referral to completion of diagnostic assessment for Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). During the COVID-19 lockdown, assessment clinics were cancelled for a four-month period between March and July 2020. The backlog that this created alongside continued increasing demand has resulted in waiting times increasing to a wait of approximately 20 months as at July 2021. Recent initiatives saw staff working extra hours and two independent providers have been contracted to address the backlog of assessments and allow for the introduction of an integrated neurodevelopment pathway, and the recruitment of additional staff in 2022. This has contributed to reduce waiting times and ASD assessments for children and young people are currently being booked in for two to three months from referral.
