Blood donation statistics (FOI)

A

Currently, how many people donate blood every year in Jersey? Please provide data from 2018 to present.

Of these people who donate blood, how many of them are black donors? Please provide data from 2018 to present.

How many islanders currently receive treatment for Sickle Cell disease at Jersey’s General Hospital? If no exact figure is allowed to be given, please could a ballpark figure be offered, i.e., less than 20, less than 10. Please provide data from 2018 to present. 

D

Are islanders who suffer with Sickle Cell disease able to receive sufficient treatment at Jersey’s General Hospital? If yes, what is the current wait time for hospital treatment? If no, where are they referred to for treatment?

Please see the table below for the number of blood donations made each year from 2018 to present. 

Data for this service is securely isolated from patient data and a database of the number of unique donors per year is not held. Interrogation of the system to identify the number of individual donors each year over the 5-year period would exceed the timescales prescribed in the Freedom of Information (Costs) (Jersey) Regulations 2014. Therefore, Article 16 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 has been applied in this respect.

Ethnicity data is not collected by Health and Community Services (HCS) on blood donors. As HCS does not hold this data, Article 3 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 applies.

C

There is a small cohort of patients on island with sickle cell trait. There are no actively treated patients. Health and Community Services would provide medical treatment in cases of sickle cell crisis, as required.

The Pathology Department at Jersey General Hospital have no records of any patient under their care for sickle cell disease for the period 2018 to present.

For the purposes of this Law, information is held by a public authority if –

(a)     it is held by the authority, otherwise than on behalf of another person; or

(b)     it is held by another person on behalf of the authority.

(1) A scheduled public authority that has been requested to supply information may refuse to supply the information if it estimates that the cost of doing so would exceed an amount determined in the manner prescribed by Regulations.
